Created To Flourish

By Dr. Grace May

Then God said,

“Let us make humankind in our image

and

let them have dominion.”

(Gen 1:26 NRSV).

Women and men were both created in God’s image and both commissioned to take care of the world.

Yet we realize that we are still so far from fulfilling God’s vision for creation. To see greater human flourishing involves restoring the God-given identity and calling of women.

What can we do? Where can we begin?

5 Possible Starting Points

1) Express your thanks to God for a sister that has helped you to navigate the challenges of life, be it in your family, workplace, neighborhood, spiritual community, or society.

2) Equip and ground yourself in the Bible. Listen to “Isn’t the Bible Sexist?” (a 7-minute video by Dr. Amy Orr-Ewing of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JFKdESF_Pk.

3) Empower a sister in your life. Pray and identify one person you’d like to bless – a mother, daughter, sister, wife, deacon, elder, pastor, widow, Sunday School teacher, worship or fellowship leader. Have a conversation and ask how you could make a difference in her life.

4) Enlist friends to discern what God is inviting you to do to see women flourish. Don’t be overwhelmed, you are only responsible for what God has called you to and the talents God has entrusted you with. But know for sure, there is a part you can play locally or globally.

5) Enroll in a Global Women’s Empowerment course. In January 2021, WCIU will be offering the biblical and theological foundations for “Women and Men in Leadership (GWE 610). Contact kirsten.feldman@wciu.edu for more details.
