Opening a PDF Document

The filename of an article you want to read may end in .pdf. This stands for Portable Document Format and is widely used. To open the article, you need to download a free Acrobat Reader. Below are instructions for doing this.

1. Go to http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html by clicking on this link.

2. Click on the arrow to the right of the box under "Select an operating system" and a drop-down list will appear.

3. In the drop-down list, click on the kind of computer operating system you have (e.g. Windows).

4. Click on the arrow to the right of the box under "Select a version."

5. In the drop-down list, click on your "model" of the program (e.g. XP SP2 which stands for Windows XP Service Pack 2).

6. If you want a language different than English, you may select it from that list.

7. Click on "Continue."

8. Follow any directions which appear on your screen.

9. Once the program is downloaded, you will see an icon for Acrobat Reader on your desktop. Click on this to install the program.

10. Double-click on your PDF file to open it.

11. You can print the PDF files like any other document, but it can take a while, especially if there are graphics in the document.
