Steps to Apply
for the

Master of Arts in International Development
With a Specialization in Global Civilization

Step 1. Request a referral from your NGO

Student applicants must first obtain a referral from their NGO (nongovernment organization). Please refer your organization to wciu.edu/ngoreferral for instructions.

Step 2. Submit Mentor Personal Information form

Students in the Global Civilization program are expected to work under the guidance of a qualified mentor in their area with whom they meet regularly.

The mentor must have a Master’s degree or higher.

Please refer your potential Mentor to wciu.edu/apply_mentor for more information and the Mentor Personal Information form.

Step 3. Complete the Student Personal Information Form (pdf)

You will need your potential Mentor’s signature on this form. In lieu of his or her signature, you may email the completed form to him or her, with the email statement, “The statements contained on the document are true to the best of my knowledge.” Ask him or her to copy the header of your email and your email statement, along with a statement of his or her own, “I agree to serve as mentor for this student.” Directions for where to mail the form are on the form.

Step 4. Send the Application Fee

Option A.
Call with your Visa or MasterCard information to 626-398-2141

Option B.
Send a check or money order to WCIU Admissions 1539 E. Howard Street Pasadena CA 91104. If you choose this option, please email admissions@wciu.edu or call 626-398-2141 to let the office know the check is on it's way.

When the above four items have been received by the Admissions and Records Office, a preliminary review will take place. If your personal information receives a favorable review, both student and mentor applicants will be asked to complete the application process. You should hear within two weeks of receipt of all preliminary application items.

At that time, you will be asked to

1. Sign our Purpose and Constituency form – Your signature will indicate your understanding of WCIU’s purpose, constituency, and goals, and a willingness to abide by the policies of WCIU and to live in accordance with the University’s values.

2. Obtain a Personal Reference – from someone not related to you, who knows your character and goals.

3. Obtain an Education Reference - from a college professor. If you have been away from studies for more than three years, the reference can be from an employer or other professional who knows your academic or logical thinking abilities.

4. Have an official copy of your transcripts sent to WCIU.

5. Complete an Admission Statement – this statement will contain information about your background and goals.

And your potential mentor will be asked to

1. Provide a personal reference.

2. Provide transcripts – if the mentor is appointed as full time faculty at a recognized university, proof of his or her appointment will be accepted in lieu of his or her transcripts.

Complete details and forms to download will be provided when student and mentor applicants are asked to continue with the application process.

The application process must be completed in four months. If your application is not complete at that time, your file will be closed. If you would, at a later time, like to reapply, the reapplication fee and admissions requirements at that time will be applied. Your inactive applicant file will be kept on file for one year.
