Due to the fact that some of the expectations of regional accreditation would price our students out of being able to afford our programs, WCIU has decided to postpone seeking accreditation with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. However we intend to continue with the high academic standards we have held all along, for the purpose of serving with excellence a special niche in the NGO world. Most of our students and graduates are in key positions as directors, administrators and staff in agencies working cross-culturally, who have been able to study with WCIU while continuing in service in locations all around the world. We are particularly interested in serving non-western leaders who would not otherwise be able to study at the graduate level. We invite you to find out for yourself if what our students have said is true, that accreditation is important, but the studies are valuable even without it. We also invite you to give us feedback on your learning experiences so we can be an ever-improving institution that strives for excellence.

![]() Accreditation William Carey International University was founded in 1977 and awarded its first degrees in 1979 under authorization of the State of California. After a thorough, State-supervised review, WCIU was granted the further status of Institutional Approval in January 1987 to grant B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. This Institutional Approval has been reaffirmed tri-annually ever since. This approval was granted by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education (BPPVE) of the State of California, which operated for many years under the Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education Reform Act. The BPPVE became inoperative as of July 1, 2007. It is hoped that a new bureau will be established by July, 2008, but in the interim, all schools in good standing with the BPPVE were given the opportunity to enter into a voluntary agreement with the State of California that they will continue to comply with the same standards. WCIU entered into this agreement, eagerly seeking to continue the same high standards we have maintained, to the end that there will be no change in the integrity of our programs. In fact, we are always looking for ways we might go beyond the minimum standards set forth by the State in providing education of excellence. |
